Summer break with Kosovoschools

It is the summer and many kids are out of Kosovo for holidays. Those who had nowhere to go, though, keep going to school...in the evenings: Kosovoschools turned several classrooms into summer-cinema for kids! Our all-in-one projector is easy to carry around and does not even need a proper screen. A white wall and a bed-sheet over the window, and there we go! If only there were less power-cuts...

More than 600 books for Novolan school

Last Thursday, the elementary school in Novolan/Nevolan received a delivery of more than 600 English textbooks, dictionaries and volumes of easy-reading fiction. The generous load was part of the adoption package provided by the Nad Aleji high-school from Prague, Czech Republic. The hand-over was attended by the Director of Education from Vushtrri/Vučitrn, who enormously appreciated the effort and humanitarian spirit of the Czech school. As there is a number of advanced English speakers and readers among the Novolan pupils, the books will certainly find its great use here. In order to enlarge recreational opportunities of its pupils, the school aims to construct a sports' playground at its premises. The value of the project is 13,000 EUR and the head-teacher is currently searching for a sponsor. Gojbulja and Karace schools adopted!

People, look at this!! - That's just a small display of what Gymnázium Jana Palacha sent to the two elementary schools in Gojbulja (Kosovo Serb) and Karace (Kosovo Albanian) villages in the Vushtrri/Vučitrn municipality. Both generous boxes of books and stationary got succesfully delivered last week.

Books delivered to Eqrem Cabej high-school

Last week, the Eqrem Cabej high-school (located in the town of Vushtrri/Vučitrn) received a large delivery of books provided by the Nad Aleji high-school of Prague. The load weighed over 100 kilos, so a number of Eqrem Cabej students had to help out with carrying the books to the school's library. The dictionaries, textbooks and volumes of English fiction will be a valuable contribution to English classes and were very thankfully accepted by local teachers. Many thanks to Nad Aleji on behalf of all the students who will profit from its generosity! (At the picture: Said and Driton - Eqrem Cabej language teachers.)

School in Novolan: English Ambitions

The elementary school of Novolan village (K/Albanian, about 4 km west of Vushttri/Vučitrn) is lucky: their head of English, Agron, is a bright and devoted person who tries to find and get the best for the kids. Most of his pupils speak intermediated to fluent English and are particularly keen on reading English books, which, however are scarce in Kosovo and in any event, too expensive for Agron or the children to afford. Out of a symbolic private donation, the school has already started a small English library and according to Agron, the kids are thrilled by the new opportunity. To extend the library (currently counting only about 25 volumes), donations of English children books would be greatly appreciated. (At the picture: Agron and some of his pupils.)

Czech highschool first one to adopt elementary school in Kosovo

Kosovoschools celebrates! - On 7 February 2008 the Czech grammar school Gymnazium Nad Aleji from Prague adopted the Novolan/Nevolan elementary school in Vushtrri/Vučitrn municipality of northern Kosovo. This is the first succesfully accomplished adoption facilitated by Kosovoschools. Gymnazium Nad Aleji decided to kindly provide a generous load of English books, textbooks and dictionaries, some of which are also intended for the students of the Eqrem Cabej highschool in Vushtrri/Vučitrn town. Congratulations and many thanks to Gymnazium Nad Aleji for being the first school to take the initiative and Adopt a School in Kosovo. Its effort will make a great difference to the educational opportunities of local children. Kosovoschools will provide further information on the delivery of the books which are to reach Kosovo by the end of next week thanks to the support of the Czech contingent of KFOR. Finally, many thanks to those, who volunteered to pick and pack the books (Mrs. Stiborkova and Mrs. Ferjencikova from Nad Aleji) and to deliver them to the logistic base of Czech Army (Mrs. Cechova). Kosovoschools is convinced that this first accomplished adoption and its first soon-to-be-completed delivery sets a succesful precedent to motivate more schools to join us soon.

Czech KFOR to support Kosovoschools!

Already by the end of next week, supply trucks of the Czech contingent of KFOR (Kosovo Force) are to bring more than 250 kilos of English books and dictionaries to its base at Sajkovac. The books were donated by Gymnazium Nad Aleji in Prague. Once the load reaches the Sajkovac base, it will be further transferred to the Karaçe elementary school and the Eqrem Cabej Grammar School of Vushtrri/Vučitrn town. Kosovoschools greatly appreaciates this very generous support of the Czech army and would like to express its most sincere thanks. Without this help, it would be extremely difficult and costly to transport the donated books from the Czech Republic to Kosovo. Two other national contingents of KFOR have already expressed their willingness to support Kosovoschools.

School in Kçic seeking road-safety wristbands

The Kçic/Kicic elementary school receives its pupils in two shifts (morning and afternoon). The kids walking to or from the school in early morning/late afternoon hours have to use the narrow side-passage by the busy main road, facing the risk of being hit by a car. The school would, therefore, very much welcome a package of bright road-safety armbands or wristbands. A total number of 75 straps is needed. In case your school would be willing to adopt the Kçic/Kicic school through providing the abovementioned equipment, please write to kosovoschools.

Kosovo schools facing lack of fire-wood

Many of Kosovo schools are in need of firewood and wood-stoves as winter strikes. Especially the kids enrolled at the morning and the evening learning-shifts when temperature often drops below 0 ºC have to keep their coats on as classrooms remain very cold. Should you be willing to improve the situation, write to kosovoschools@gmail.com.

School in Karace village

The school in Karace village is among the tiniest ones in northern Kosovo. Several tens of local kids attend the school. There is only one classroom and one teacher to take care of the needs of all pupils (Gr. 1-7). The school would welcome to have a link with another school from English-speaking environment and possibly obtain English textbooks and dictionaries. As there is a provisional playground in front of the school, most kinds of sports' equipment would find great use here.
